The Incarnation of Trauma: A Call to Social Justice

January 21 @ 6:45 pm - 9:00 pm

$21 – $36

TN Association of Pastoral Therapists Mid-Winter (Virtual) Gathering (2022)

Cassandra Riedy Rush

Presenter: Cassandra Riedy Rush (BA, Religious Studies, Georgetown University, 2009; MA, Theology, Ethics and Culture, University of Virginia, 2011; MA, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Belmont University, 2018; Doctoral Candidate, George Washington University) currently serves as a Lecturer at Belmont University for the Mental Health Program in the College of Theology Christian Ministry. She is engaged in private practice at New Moon Rising Wellness in Franklin, Tennessee where she specializes in trauma-informed care and perinatal mental health.  Cassandra has served as Assistant Resident Manager at the Center for Living and Learning, a residential facility for persons experiencing severe and persistent mental illness, and at the Community Counseling Services Center in Washington D.C. where she served as a counselor and supervisor for counselors-in-training. Cassandra has published works on parental substance abuse, health disparities regarding intimate partner violence, and crisis counseling.

Content: In this presentation, Cassandra will detail biological responses to trauma and explore their implications for therapeutic practice. She will expand understanding of the biology of trauma to complex trauma, intergenerational trauma, and other nuanced forms that include racialized trauma. In doing so, the presentation will highlight how systemic oppression results in stark health disparities and perpetuates a vicious cycle in which wellness becomes harder and harder for marginalized individuals to attain. Cassandra will open up discussion for the implications of the biological impact of trauma regarding pastoral therapeutic practice and for enacting social justice. She will provide an experiential activity to foster deepened insight and model potential decolonizing therapeutic interventions.
