NPI July CE Meeting, TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy

July 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Program Description

Over 16 million people in the U.S. suffer from depression. And more than 4 million people are not satisfied with their current treatment with antidepressant medication.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy is an advanced technique that uses pulsed magnetic technology, similar to MRI-strength magnet, to stimulate areas of the brain that have low metabolic activity. The process helps invigorate the brain’s natural ability to build new or improve the function of networks that control mood and behavior, which provides relief from depression.

We will explore the background of TMS and current use.  This will include how it can be used along with traditional treatments, specifically psychotherapy, to reduce symptoms and improve outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to define treatment resistant depression.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss the role of TMS in the treatment of depression.
  3. Participants will be able to describe the process of TMS from intake to end of treatment.
  4. Participants will be able to discuss research combining TMS and CBT.
  5. Participants will be able to discuss the TMS Outcomes Registry.

Scott West, MD has a philosophy of treatment that involves seeing each patient as a whole person including mind, body and spirit, and as an individual with unique life experiences and circumstances. Dr. West uses psychotherapy and/or medications as indicated to meet the needs of his patients as well as helping them find services to guide them toward a healthy lifestyle. This approach has led him to receive honors such as the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 1994, as well as the St. Thomas Hospital Humanitarian Award in 2009.

Dr. West began practicing psychiatry in 1986 following his residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Department of Psychiatry. He has maintained an outpatient private practice, served as Medical Director of the Neurobehavioral Unit at St. Thomas Hospital from 1987 to 2018 and is currently Medical Director for BrightQuest Nashville and Nashville NeuroCare Therapy.

In April of 2010, Dr. West brought the technology of NeuroStar TMS Therapy® to Nashville, becoming the first physician in Tennessee to offer the option of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy for patients whose depression has not responded to a course of antidepressant medication.
