Learning objectives:

In the context of gender diversity in Appalachia, participants in this workshop will:

  • Review general concepts and vocabulary
  • Broaden awareness of gender diversity and Appalachian identity intersection
  • Define and apply Minority Stress Theory
  • Assess personal bias and describe impact of transphobia
  • Identify barriers to health care access and common experiences
  • Identify mental health needs and treatment concerns
  • Review role of Psychology
  • Describe interdisciplinary care options and services

Meet the Presenter:

Katherine Barteck, Psy.D., was raised in rural Missouri. Ten years ago, she chose to return to her rural roots and settle her family in Northeast TN. Dr. Barteck works for the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center where she serves our Nation’s Veterans as a Staff Psychologist, the LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator, and the Transgender Health Facility Lead. She has also owned her own private practice in Johnson City, TN since 2014.

Prior to moving to Tennessee, she provided in-home therapy to children and families in both the rural and urban communities of Northern Virginia and Maryland.  Dr. Barteck’s education includes Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and French from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2001, a  Master’s degree in General Psychology from the Catholic University of America in 2005, and both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland in 2012.

In her time off, Dr. Barteck serves on the Board of Directors for the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, raises 3 children, and tries to keep up with her husband of 14 years

Continuing Education

Frontier Health is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  Frontier Health maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Participants will receive 3.0 hours of credit for attending.  Variable credit may not be given per APA guidelines.  Full attendance is required.

Note that this program is designed to meet Tennessee continuing education requirements in the area of diversity for licensure renewal in psychology.

While it is not required for attendees to leave their cameras operational during the training, the organizer must be able to communicate by audio and video at the beginning of the training to verify attendance and qualify for CE credit. The APA requires that attendees be present for the entire training and be capable of interacting with the speaker.
